Sneezing On Floor

What kind of flooring is best for allergy sufferers?

The answer might surprise you!

Did you know that 1 in 6 Canadians suffers from seasonal allergies? The biggest causes are pollen and spores from plants, mold and fungi, which have reached record-breaking levels in the last few years. Most of us have become keenly aware of pollen counts, which measure the quantity of pollen particles in the air, because these levels can severely affect our lives. Coughing, sneezing, itchy and watery eyes are only the mild symptoms – many allergy sufferers also have asthmatic reactions and have to take medication to improve their respiratory health.

Allergy sufferers know that indoor air quality can really improve their daily life and reduce the needs for medications. But, taking steps to keep homes dust and particle-free can be a monumental task, and it seems as though a hardwood or laminate floor could make the job easier. But does having a hard floor actually keep a home cleaner? Does carpet make allergies better, or worse?

The surprising truth about carpet and allergies

The truth is that carpet may keep the air cleaner and more free of pollen! According to a study  by a leading biomedical research organization, carpeting actually works to trap particles until it can be vacuumed up and disposed of, effectively keeping pollen out of the air (and out of your body). The research showed that a room with a hard floor actually had 4 times the amount of pollen in it versus a room with carpeting!

Effective carpet cleaning – such as vacuuming with a high efficiency filter and hot water extraction reduced both surface allergens and airborne particle counts, maintaining indoor air quality. A bare floor, such as hardwood, laminate, or tile, allows particles to fly back into the air of your home every time you walk through a room. It seems counter-intuitive to a lot of people to think that carpeting is better than a bare floor for allergies,, but 4 times less particles makes a serious difference!
